There are many species of roaches but there are 2 main types that invade a home.

German cockroach

German Roach

This is the roach most people have problems with infesting the kitchen in droves. Anyone can get these pests but the sanitation and clutter of the structure can exponentially aggravate the situation. The more food and harborage they have the more aggressive they will reproduce. Each egg can hold 30-50 babies produced every 6 weeks. This can result in over 1 million roaches in 4 months! Different forms of gastroenteritis (food poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea, and other illnesses) appear to be the principal diseases transmitted by German cockroaches. The organisms causing these diseases are carried on the legs and bodies of cockroaches and are deposited on food and utensils as the cockroaches forage. Cockroach excrement and cast skins also contain a number of allergens to which many people exhibit allergic responses, such as skin rashes, watery eyes and sneezing, congestion of nasal passages, and asthma.

Wood roaches

American roaches
American roaches

Wood roaches include species such as American Roach, Oriental roaches, Brown Banded roaches and others. These generally do not infest the home in the manner that German roaches do. The wood roaches usually come in from the outside via holes and gaps. These can be an indication of a moisture problem or excessive landscaping and storage. The treatment is different for wood roaches and german roaches. You must know which of these pest you are having a problem with to attack it properly.
